  • China’s National IC Fund Will Begin to Shift Its Development Focus from Foundries to Fabless IC Design, Says TrendForce
    12-19-2016 TrendForce
China’s National Integrated Circuitry Investment Fund (here referred to as “National IC Fund”) has committed to invest nearly RMB 70 billion into the domestic semiconductor sector since its creation in 2015. Approximately 60% of the committed investment amount has been allocated to building semiconductor wafer fabs, according to TrendForce’s analysis. After finishing providing capital for projects related to semiconductor manufacturing, the National IC Fund is expected to concentrate its investments on the development of the domestic fabless IC design industry. • Upstream First-Tier Suppliers in LCD Industry Will Face Greater Competitive Pressure from Chinese Rivals in 2017, Says TrendForce
    12-19-2016 TrendForce
WitsView, a division of TrendForce, reports that upstream LCD component suppliers based in China have significantly expanded their manufacturing capabilities through 2016 and will become stronger competitors against their international first-tier counterparts in 2017. As more advanced LCD panel fabs (Gen-8 and above) are being built in China and begin operation, local suppliers of materials and components such as glass substrates and polarizers are gearing up to fulfill their demand. • Cutting Costs Will Be Imperative for PV Enterprises as They Face Falling Prices in 2017, Says TrendForce
    12-15-2016 Corrine Lin
EnergyTrend, a division of TrendForce, estimates that the total PV demand worldwide for 2016 will reach 69.5GW. The installation rush in China during the year’s first half and significant market growth in the U.S. and India have been driving this year’s demand. [ more ]
  • TrendForce Projects Global Shipments of VR Devices for 2016 to Reach 2.91 Million Units, Driven Mainly By Holiday Sales
    12-15-2016 Jason Tsai
TrendForce’s latest market survey finds that VR devices will enjoy strong sales this Christmas season on account that game consoles are also going to be popular gift purchases. Based on TrendForce’s latest analysis, annual shipments of VR devices worldwide (excluding mobile VR device) are projected to reach 2.91 million units for 2016 and grow massively by 75% to 5.1 million units for 2017. In terms of ranking of brands by shipments, Sony is expected to take first place this year, followed by Oculus in second and HTC in third. [ more ]
  • Prices in DRAM Market Will Keep Rising Through 2017 as Annual Bit Supply Is Projected to Expand by Less Than 20%, Says TrendForce
    12-14-2016 Avril Wu
The global DRAM market has been on a roller coaster ride during 2016. Prices were on a steep slide in the year’s first half due to weak demand. However, the pickup in notebook shipments and the strong sales of Chinese branded smartphones since the start of the third quarter have not only reversed the price downtrend but also caused average selling prices of DRAM to make big jumps. Looking ahead to 2017, DRAMeXchange, a division of TrendForce, forecasts that DRAM bit supply will expand by less than 20% annually. This growth rate will also be a new historical low for the industry. Assuming that there will be no significant weakening of demand, DRAM supply will generally remain tight next year. Thus, suppliers should continue to reap profits during the entire 2017 on account of rising prices. [ more ]
  • TrendForce Expects LED Suppliers to Accelerate Their Expansion into Niche Markets in 2017
    12-12-2016 Roger Chu
The value of the global LED market is estimated to grow 3.4% annually to US$14.8 billion in 2016, according to LEDinside, a division of TrendForce. The LED industry will again be under tremendous competitive pressure in 2017, and participants will need to accelerate their entries into more profitable niche markets such as fine-pitch LED displays, UV LEDs and IR LEDs. LEDinside forecasts that the value of the global LED market will total US$15.4 billion, up 4% from 2016. [ more ]
  • Shortage of NAND Flash to Cause Prices of SSDs and EMMCs to Rise by Over 10% Sequentially in First Quarter of 2017, Says TrendForce
    12-12-2016 Sean Yang
DRAMeXchange, a division of TrendForce, reports that the global shortage of NAND Flash has reached its most severe phase for 2016 in this fourth quarter. Factors that aggravate the shortage include strong smartphone shipments, growing SSD demand and the increase in the average memory density of eMMCs and eMCPs. [ more ]
  • Demand for xEV Batteries to Grow 17% Annually in 2017 on Back of Recovery of China’s xEV Market
    12-08-2016 Duff Lu
Global volume demand for lithium batteries that power xEVs (plug-in vehicles) is estimated to reach 1.7 billion units in 2016 and grow by 17% annually to 2 billion units in 2017, according to EnergyTrend, a division of TrendForce. EnergyTrend reports that the China has taken measures to curb excessive subsidy payments to domestic xEV manufacturers during the second half of 2016. Thus, the delay in subsidy payments and investigation on potential cases of subsidy fraud have impacted market demand for xEV batteries in the short term. With the investigation winding down, China’s xEV market is expected to make full recovery and again become the key demand driver for xEV batteries in 2017. [ more ]
