  • TrendForce Says Production Capacity for Large-Size LCD Panels Continues to Expand in Second Half of 2017; Supply to Become Important Factor in Fourth Quarter
    07-13-2017 / Kou-Han Tseng
The overall production capacity for large-size LCD panels rose above the expected level in the first half of 2017 despite seasonal headwinds, according to research by WitsView, a division of TrendForce. Panel suppliers actually found their processing lines fully loaded and were compelled to make some of their newly added production capacity available ahead of schedule. WitsView estimates that the global production capacity for large-size LCD panels in terms of total glass input area will increase by 5.8% annually in 2017 to reach 218.3 million square meters. This figure is 0.3 percentage point above an earlier estimate. Supply will become an important factor in determining the course of the panel market during second half of 2017, especially in the fourth quarter. [ more ]
  • Accident at LGD’s Gen-8.5 Fab in South Korea Will Tighten Supply for Large-Size LCD Panels This Third Quarter, TrendForce Reports
    06-27-2017 / TrendForce
LG Display (LGD) suffered a serious disruption to its production of large-size LCD panels on June 24, when a deadly accident occurred at its P8-1 panel fab in Paju, South Korea. The Gen-8.5 has been shut down for repair and investigation by the local authorities. WitsView, a division of TrendForce, states that this incident will have a major impact on the supply of large-size panels in the third quarter. While panel quotes have softened during the second quarter, the third quarter will see a return of seasonal demand from device vendors. The accident at P8-1 will contribute to a tightening of the supply and help prop up prices to some extent. [ more ]
  • Chinese ODMs Have Rapidly Risen to Prominence as Competition for Panel Supply Becomes Critical, TrendForce Reports
    06-27-2017 / TrendForce
This year's top four LCD TV ODMs by their target shipments in order will be TCL, TPV, Foxconn and BOE Vision-Electronic Technology (BOEVT), according to the preliminary estimation by WitsView, a division of TrendForce. The fourth-place BOEVT in particular has emerged as a major pure ODM by taking advantage of the vast panel supply provided by its group company BOE Technology (BOE). Furthermore, BOEVT will be taking on U.S.-based VIZIO as its client for the first time in the second half of this year. The collaboration between the two companies indicates that Chinese ODMs are starting to play a bigger role in the global TV supply chain. [ more ]
  • TrendForce Expects Quotes for TV Panels to Remain Fairly Stable During Second Quarter but Price Negotiations in Medium-Size Range Will Become Noisier
    05-09-2017 / TrendForce
Though major LCD panel makers have reported strong earnings for the first quarter of 2017, there are concerns within the panel market that the general price increase across panel products has reached in its peak and this trend may start to turn in the near term. The latest analysis from WitsView, a division of TrendForce, indicates that TV panel quotes on the whole will stay relatively stable in the second quarter, with the exception being noisy price negotiations in the medium-size range or sizes 40 to 43 inches. As for prices for panels used in other applications, quotes for monitor panels are on a gradual monthly slide due the off-season effect. Meanwhile, quotes for notebook panels are also relatively stable this second quarter due to returning demand resulting from earlier purchase adjustments made by notebook brands. [ more ]
  • 4K Penetration Surpassed 30% for First Time in 1Q17 LCD TV Panel Shipments, Says TrendForce
    04-24-2017 / Iris Hu
WitsView, a division of TrendForce, reports LCD TV panel shipments for this first quarter totaled 60.16 million units, representing a drop of 10.7% compared with the prior quarter but also a year-on-year increase of 0.4%. Looking at major trends in the TV panel market, the growing demand for 4K resolution is accompanying the steady increase in the average panel size. Despite seasonal headwinds, first-quarter shipments of UHD (4K resolution) TV panels went up 0.5% sequentially to reach 20 million units for the first time ever and accounted for 33.3% of the total TV panel shipments. This year’s increase in the average size of TV panels, however, will lead to an annual growth of 7.3% in total shipment area. [ more ]
  • TrendForce Reports Shipments of 65-Inch LCD Panels Grew 4% in February Over Prior Month Despite Fewer Work Days
    03-23-2017 / Iris Hu
A total of 18.71 million units of large-size LCD panels were shipped worldwide this February, according to WitsView, a division of TrendForce. Fewer work days in February delayed some shipment deliveries to March. Furthermore, shipments of panels belonging to the medium-to-small sections of the size spectrum have been constrained by the general price upswing. Set against the prior month, large-size panel shipments declined by 5.8% in February. A year-on-year comparison on the other hand shows a 4.6% increase. [ more ]
  • Large-Size LCD Panel Shipments Fell Just 2.4% Monthly in October as Vendors Continue to Stock Up for Promotional Events, Says TrendForce
    11-22-2016 / Iris Hu
Though panel shipments were strong in October, they represented a monthly drop from the much larger shipments in September. WitsView, a division of TrendForce, reports that October shipments of large-size panels (sized 7 inches and above, resolution at WSVGA and above) totaled 66.83 million units, down slightly by 2.4% compared with the prior month.
